Carbon Footprint in Pharma

How a pharmaceutical company can get aware of the scope 3 emissions impact caused by the fill & finish equipment ? A product carbon footprint calculation of a machine already in production

In the realm of sustainability and pharmaceutical innovation, two distinct narratives converge.

Through continuous optimization at the customer site, the customer is pursuing the goal of producing CO2-neutrally by 2024. After 2025 fossil fuels should no longer be used. The CO2 reduction is realized through various projects: purchase of green electricity, purchase of district steam and district heating from waste incineration plants. Reduction of energy consumption in production by actively detecting unnecessary consumption. (e.g. finding compressed air leaks, replacing motors with more efficient types, optimising HVAC systems). Production adjustments were verified before and after the adjustment (e.g. power consumption measurements over a certain period of time) in order to then define additional target values.

For further optimization, it is now important to include the machine level in order to identify further levers for a better CO2 balance. The carbon footprint analysis is used to determine the CO2 drivers in production using existing production data (from ongoing operations). The focus of an existing machine is on the optimization of production modes and the possible replacement with more efficient components.
