Stringent legal requirements and eco-conscious consumers drive the change towards sustainable packaging and have given wraparound cardboard sleeves a boost in popularity. Shrink-wrapped cans, pots and trays, which have been dominating food packaging for decades, will gradually disappear from the aisles.
Cardboard is a great choice of material. It is sustainable, provides packaging stability, and offers premium branding opportunities. Many applications in the field prove that it is gaining ground in the food industry: cardboard trays with matching sleeves are increasingly used for products such as ready-made meals.
Cardboard sleeves score points with high shelf appeal, good product protection, and recyclability at the same time, which puts them ahead of conventional single-use plastic films.
But how to change packaging solutions that have been a mainstay of food and beverage packaging for decades?

A cardboard sleeve is a type of packaging commonly used to encase and protect products. Unlike full cartons that completely enclose the product, a carton sleeve typically wraps around the product or its primary container, leaving the ends open. This packaging solution is popular for a variety of goods, ranging from food items to household products, due to its versatility, cost-effectiveness, and ease of use.
Cardboard sleeves are considered a sustainable packaging option for several reasons. They offer a blend of environmental benefits that help reduce the overall ecological footprint of packaging processes. Here’s a detailed look at why cardboard sleeves are sustainable:
Recyclability: Cardboard sleeves are highly recyclable. After use, they can be collected, processed, and turned into new paper products. This recycling process significantly reduces waste sent to landfills and conserves natural resources by reusing existing materials.
Reduced material usage: Cardboard sleeves use less material compared to full cartons or plastic packaging, which means fewer resources are needed for production. This reduction in material usage translates to lower energy consumption and fewer emissions during manufacturing.
Innovation in sustainable practices: Advancements in manufacturing have led to the development of even more sustainable cardboard options, such as those made from recycled fibers or agricultural waste. These innovations continue to enhance the environmental benefits of using cardboard sleeves.
The sleeve design needs to immediately follow the product design. The tightness of the sleeve, the security features and its location are all fixed during the design stage.
